Isentress (raltegravir) is an antiviral medicine that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from multiplying in your body.
Isentress is used to treat HIV, the virus that can cause the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Isentress is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.
Isentress may cause a severe skin reaction that can be fatal. Stop taking this medicine and get emergency medical help if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling.
In rare cases, Isentress can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Isentress if you are allergic to raltegravir.
To make sure Isentress is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- a muscle disorder;
- liver disease; or
- a history of mental illness or depression.
